8th Grade Philosophical Friday

Here are some questions to help you wrap your mind around the concept of virtue. Use these questions to add to whatever your research has shown you so far.

Through the process of inquiry and philosophical discussion, your goal is to determine the nature of evil. Here are some questions to spur your thinking.

What is virtue?

How do we know if someone is truly virtuous?

What is untested virtue?

Do we lack virtue as individuals and a society? Who should exhibit virtue the most? Who most needs it?

Why is virtue important?

How many possible ideas about virtue exist? Are there different types of virtue?

What role do ethics and morals play in identifying virtue? Do you know the difference between ethics and morals?

Who determines what is and what is not virtuous?

How might a deliberate attempt to be virtuous benefit society?

Can an entire society or group be virtuous in a way unique to that society or group? Does the same idea apply to nations?

In the future, in which directions might virtue go? In other words, how might ideas about what virtue is change over time? Why?

7th Grade for Philosophical Friday

Posted: December 11, 2017 in Home

I am looking forward to seeing what you can do in a student led philosophical conversation. The following questions will help you to wrap your mind around the concept of evil.

Through the process of inquiry and philosophical discussion, your goal is to determine the nature of evil. Here are some questions to spur your thinking.

1). What types of evil are there?

2). Is evil necessary?

3). Does evil stem from good or vice versa?

4). Does evil exist outside of us? Does it exist only within us? Is it only a human concept?

5). Is evil a force, an entity?

6). What role does evil play in human affairs?

7). What conditions must be met to determine if something is evil or not? How do we understand evil?

Where does evil exist? Does it exist in those who commit certain acts? Does it exist in the acts themselves, or does it occur to the witnesses of such acts, during and after the fact?

Is evil more than an action? Can evil exist in thoughts? Is evil a thought in and of itself?

Philosophical Friday

Posted: December 7, 2017 in Home

On 12/15/17 (next Friday), we will have our first Philosophical Friday. You are expected to research your topic prior to participating–you must come prepared; you must bring something to the table, or you will most likely not benefit from our discussion.

8th Grade topic: Virtue

7th Grade topic: Evil

I will post discussion questions here in the next few days–probably on Monday.

7th Grade Diagramming Make-up Days

Posted: December 3, 2017 in Home

Attention 7th grade: Make-ups and unfinished for the diagramming test must be resolved on Tuesday and Wednesday after school–that’s 12/5 and 12/6. You will have from the end of 7th period until about 3:30 to complete your work.

**If you missed the entire test, and do not come to make it up, it will be recorded as a zero.
**If you do not come to finish your test, I will simply mark anything incomplete as if it is incorrect.
