Answering MCAS Open Response Questions

Posted: January 12, 2016 in Home

Answering Open Response Questions:

1). Never dive right in!! Work out your answer on a separate piece of paper.

2). Plan your response—make sure you know what you want to say and how you plan to say it.

3). Answer the question while you “turn it around”—simultaneously in the very first sentence. Remember: you are writing from an answer, not toward one. In other words, you write to explain your answer—not to find it. The answer to the question is called your CLAIM.

Moreover, you should avoid vague words and expressions like “many things.” Say what you mean.

4). Be sure to use quotes from the reading to support your claim.

5). Explain how the quotes support your claim.

6). Write an interesting conclusion based on your claim—do not simply repeat your claim. Avoid formulaic expressions, such as, “as you can see, I am simply repeating my first sentence.”
